Refractive Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery

What is custom, blade-free, laser assisted cataract surgery? ReLACSTM.

Two Evansville eye surgeons, Dr. Jon Weyer, M.D.   and Dr. Andrew Tharp, M.D., F.A.C.S. at The Vision Care Center are the first in the tri-state to perform  bladeless, laser assisted cataract surgery. It’s called ReLACSTM, or Refractive Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery, and like LASIK, it brings a new standard of precision to cataract surgery.  This custom, blade-free, laser assisted cataract removal option allows the surgeons at The Vision Care Center to plan and perform cataract surgeries to exacting, individualized specifications unattainable with standard cataract surgery.  The doctors successfully performed seven such procedures last week.

SightPath-MoFe-Femtosecond-laser2This Femtosecond laser signifies a bold leap forward in cataract surgery by bringing image-guided computer precision to refractive cataract surgeons.  The system performs surgery according to surgeon preferences, using focused laser pulses to create incisions in the lens capsule, crystalline lens and the cornea.  This results in treatments that are tailored to surgeon specifications and may deliver a remarkable degree of accuracy, thereby extending the surgeon’s expertise with laser precision.  Surgeons utilizing this new technology will be able to create predictable openings that carry through subsequent steps of cataract surgery as it helps them deliver on a targeted refractive outcome.

Cataract surgery is the most commonly performed surgery in the United States.  With the first wave of baby boomers turning 65, the number of people suffering from decreased vision due to cataracts, or a cloudy lens, is only expected to grow.

“We’re excited to continually find ways to make cataract surgery safer and more predictable” says Dr. Andrew W. Tharp, M.D. F.A.C.S. at The Vision Care Center.  “There are no two eyes that are exactly the same, so our ability to use a laser provides optimization for each patient.”

Since cataract surgery using ReLACSTM  uses the laser to perform the most critical steps of cataract surgery, which used to be done by hand, patients not only receive the highest-precision in surgical incision but can also reduce their dependence on glasses after their surgery.  “For years we have offered advanced intraocular lenses that replace the cloudy lens we remove in cataract surgery” says Dr. Weyer.  “These lens options help people improve their vision at distance, at near, and even help people with astigmatism.  When used in conjunction with ReLACSTM , these lenses may mean a lot more freedom from glasses after cataract surgery for this group of people who remain very active for decades after their retirement.”

With the Aging of baby boomers, cataract surgery will grow and patients will want as much customization as possible.  That is why The Vision Care Center has begun to perform ReLACSTM  cataract surgery  If you or someone you know has cloudy vision, hazy vision or glare, call or visit The Vision Care Center, or contact your local eye care provider.
