Macular Degeneration and Diabetic Retinopathy Treatment

Avastin Eye Injection for Eye Disease and Macular Degeneration

The Vision Care Center is now offering Avastin, which is used to treat several eye and retina diseases like age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic retinopathy

What is Avastin?

Avastin was initially approved by FDA as a cancer drug but is widely used as an off label use for the treatment of abnormal blood vessels that are found in conditions such as macular degeneration. For abnormal blood vessels to grow in your eye, they need a chemical called vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). Avastin blocks the production of VEGF and slows the growth of blood vessels in the eye that can leak and cause vision loss. Along with macular degeneration, Avastin treats other retina disorders such as: macular swelling, central retinal vein occlusions (CRVO), branch retinal vein occlusions (BRVO), and diabetic retinopathy.
