Refractive Lens Exchange
Refractive lens exchange, also called lens replacement surgery or clear lens extraction, may be a better option than LASIK for people with presbyopia and high hyperopia (farsightedness). Refractive lens exchange replaces your eye’s clear natural lens with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL) to correct your refractive error and achieve sharp focus. The procedure for refractive lens exchange is virtually identical to cataract surgery except the lens being replaced is clear, rather than a cloudy lens due to a cataract. As in cataract surgery, several types of IOLs are available to replace your natural lens, depending on your vision needs and the health of your eyes. Ask us about our premium IOLs and how they can give you crisp, clear vision without the need for glasses or contacts.
LASEK (Laser Assisted Epithelial Keratectomy)
LASEK is an eye surgery that combines many of the benefits of other vision correction surgeries. Laser epithelial keratomileusis, or LASEK, combines benefits of the two most commonly performed procedures — LASIK and PRK. LASEK eye surgery is used to treat astigmatism, nearsightedness, or farsightedness.
This procedure is used when the cornea (front surface of the eye) is too thin and cannot sustain a flap for LASIK. Foregoing flap creation preserves tissue and ensures that the cornea or front surface of the eye is not excessively thinned. Post operatively this procedure has more pain/discomfort and a longer recovery and is only suggested when LASIK is not an option.
Anterior Chamber Implant
This procedure is best for patients who are too nearsighted for LASIK. This implant is centered in front of the pupil and attached to the iris (the colored part of the eye). The implant works as a glasses or contact lens prescription within the eye. The natural crystalline lens of the eye is left in place and untouched within the eye.
